Do I need any vaccinations before traveling to South Africa?

No vaccinations are required when visiting South Africa but if your are visiting a malaria area it is important that you talk to your local Doctor before so that he/she can prescribe suitable medication

Should I get travel insurance?

Yes, we believe it to be important to have travel insurance before you travel abroad. We recommend that you compare prices of different insurances well ahead of your departure to South Africa so that you can choose the one that best suits you.

How much luggage can I take with me on the plane?

Normally, 20kg is the maximum luggage allowed per person in economy class as well as a small hand luggage. In business class you are often allowed 30 kg and a smaller hand luggage. We recommend that you check with the airline you are flying with prior to departure so as to avoid excess weight charges.

How far in advance should I book?

South Africa is a very popular destination, so we recommend that you book well in advance especially if you are planning to travel during Christmas and New Year. During this period you should be booking your flight latest by April to get a good price and we recommend that already then you book your accommodation for the entire visit.

In country
Can I withdraw money with my foreign ATM card?

Yes, normally there is no problem but to be safe check with your bank before travelling. There are plenty of ATMs in South Africa.

Can Travel For Life help me with my other bookings, like domestic flights, golf and restaurants?

Of course we are happy to help you book domestic flights, golf and restaurants reservations.

Will my mobile work in SA?

If you have a mobile phone that allows roaming then your mobile phone will work in South Africa. But remember, that you are paying for the cost from your home country to South Africa when someone calls you.

Can I drink the tap water in South Africa?

Yes, there is no harm in drinking tap water in the bigger cities. Some safari lodges will recommend guests not to drink water from the tap and then there is always bottled mineral water available.

How do I get VAT refunds on products I bought in SA?

Non-resident foreign passport holders (older than 7years of age) on a temporary visit to South Africa can claim a VAT refund for purchases made during their visit. The quickest way is to visit the VAT refund inspection desk at the Clock Tower, V&A Waterfront. You must have your passport, flight ticket and original Tax Invoice with you. Claims are only processed 1 week prior to departure and queues are generally smaller then at the airport. You still have to show your goods at the airport so remember to pack these last. At the airport, before checking in, you join the queue for “V&A inspection done” and show the already processed inspection and your goods and receive a check with the VAT return. Once you have done the check-in you can collect your refund after passing the departure gates. For more information go into

What currency to you use?

The South African currency is the Rand. Most hotels, restaurants and shops accept credit cards. It is most convenient to use your credit and debit cards in Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs). ATMs are plentiful in South Africa, but it is advisable to be cautious when drawing large amounts of money from machines. Most major commercial banks offer foreign exchange services. Some banks are able to provide foreign exchange and credit cards. Most vendors (especially in Botswana) do not accept AMEX cards.

If you are travelling to Botswana, Mozambique, Zimbabwe or Zambia, the currency of choice is the US Dollar. All vendors, restaurants and attractions accept payment in US Dollars. Most hotels accept credit cards (for settling extras). Please make sure to take dollars in small denominations. And make especially sure that you carry NEW dollar bills (issued after the year 2000) Older notes are not accepted in US Dollar-based countries in Africa.

What time zone is South Africa in?

South Africa is in GMT +2 hours, which is great when traveling from Europe as you will not suffer from any jetlag.

How is the weather in SA?

Cape Town and the Garden Route have a similar climate to that of the Mediterranean, with a long warm summer and mild winter. In the summer the days are hot with strong winds and the temperature is normally between 23 and 30 degrees. Our winter is relatively mild and wet but normally after a few days of rain the sun pays us a rewarding visit. We don’t get many days below 13 degrees.

Northern South Africa gets hotter summers than Cape Town but their summer is also their rainy period with a few hours of thunder and lightning most afternoons. In the winter the days are clear and sunny with 16 to 24 degrees but very chilly at night. Winter in South Africa is considered the best time of year to go on safari. Given that South Africa is in the southern hemisphere our seasonal months are the opposite in relation to Europe and the United States.

Is crime a reason to not travel to South Africa?

Crime in South Africa is a big national concern. As a tourist you should be careful not to walk alone at night, don’t withdraw money from the ATM when there is no one around and avoid certain areas. Saying this, the same applies anywhere in the world. Since moving to South Africa we have never felt threatened or unsafe, but we are careful and avoid falling prey to such accidents by being cautious.

How do I book?

To book through us is very easy. You can call or email us the dates you will be in Southern Africa. Within 48 hours (week days) we will send you an itinerary with a suggested trip and once you are fully satisfied with the itinerary we will then make all the booking reservations and send you an invoice with the payment conditions.

How do I pay?

You have two options: you can do a direct transfer to Travel For Life’s bank account in South Africa, which is easily done using your Internet banking. You will find Travel For Life’s bank details on your invoice which is sent together with your final itinerary. On presentation of the invoice, we require full pre-payment (100%) for domestic and regional flights and 50% deposit on the difference in order to confirm your travel arrangements. (Subject to change, as some of our suppliers’ payment policies are more stringent than ours for bookings during their peak season or specials). The balance is due 45 days (6 weeks) prior to travel. Bookings made within 2 – 6 weeks prior to travel will be subject to full pre-payment on presentation of invoice.

We accept Visa and MasterCard but not American Express or Diners Club. You will have to call your bank first to authorise the payment, otherwise it will be declined.

If you are making payment with bank transfer, our bank details will be on the invoice. Payments are normally cleared within five business days.

If you fail to make the payments on or before the due date, your booking will be cancelled and you will forfeit the relevant deposit.

Price increase

All Customer Quotation Forms and Customer Confirmation forms generated by Travel For Life are based upon external supplier costs such as air fares, airport taxes, fuel surcharges, car hire, park fees and gate fees which are outside of the control of Travel For Life. These supplier costs are therefore subject to change until final payment has been received or in the instance of air travel, until air tickets have been issued.

You agree that should any such costs increase, such an increase will be for your account and shall be payable to Travel For Life or as otherwise instructed by Travel For Life.

You also acknowledge that:

Airlines reserve the right to levy additional or increased airport taxes and fuel charges – without notice – at any stage prior to flight and any such costs increased as a result of an increase effected by the airline will be for the Client’s account and shall be payable to Travel For Life or as otherwise instructed by the airlines.
Road transportation companies such as transfer and car rental companies reserve the right to levy additional charges due to fuel price increases and/or government road levies – without notice – at any stage prior to and any such costs increase as a result of an increase effected by the road transportation company will be for the Client’s account and shall be payable to Travel For Life or as otherwise instructed by the road transportation company.
Government/National Bodies, concession owners and other such parties involved in the running of private or public natural parks reserve the right to levy additional or increased park fees – without notice – at any stage prior to arrival and any such costs increased as a result of an increase effected by such parties will be for the Client’s account and shall be payable to Travel For Life or as otherwise instructed by such parties.

Changes to itineraries

Should you wish to make a Voluntary Change to your confirmed booking, Travel For Life will use its best endeavours to accommodate you. However Travel For Life reserves the right to charge the applicable cancellation fees referred above as well as an additional administration fee of R500.00 per person per booking, amended together with any additional costs arising from the Voluntary Change, including those charged by the relevant Supplier.


For flight bookings, we require a copy of all passengers’ passports. Airlines require the full names of passengers as printed on the passports and will not accept changes once tickets are issued for security purposes. The company accepts no responsibility for incorrect passport numbers or incorrect spelling of full names.

If you would like us to purchase any domestic or regional flights, a surcharge of R500 per booking will be added to the itinerary.

It is your responsibility to check and correct any errors in respect of your flight reservations which appear on the Booking Confirmation and Booking Form. Travel For Life accepts no liability for incorrect details provided by you.

Travel For Life can gladly assist with international flights, which will be booked with our local agents in selected countries.

Flights can only be purchased once passengers’ passports have been provided and the payment reflects in our account – Travel For Life accepts no responsibility for increased flight prices / flights no longer being available due to delay of either of the above.

Travel deals and discounted rates

All Travel Deals and Discounted Rates advertised on the Travel For Life website or quoted in the Itineraries have separate terms and conditions prescribed by the Supplier of the relevant goods and/or Services. It is your responsibility to obtain such separate terms and conditions as you will be bound by them.

Passports, Visas and travelling with children

You must be in possession of a passport valid for at least 6 months after your return date in order to enter the country. The passport must also contain at least TWO unused pages when presenting the passport for endorsements in South Africa. Additional pages will be necessary if you are also travelling to other countries during your trip.


All travellers must have valid visas for the countries they will be visiting. These must be obtained before travel commences and are not the responsibility of Travel For Life. //

Traveling with children to South Africa

In June 2015 new regulations came into place regarding travel with children to or from South Africa.

Parents need to travel with an unabridged birth certificate, this is an official document that includes the names of both parents of the child.

If one parent are travelling with children under the age of 18 they also need to have a Parental Consent Affidavit.

Health Precautions

If you will be visiting malaria areas we advise that you take prophylactics. Please consult your doctor before leaving home. Visit the travel clinic website to read more on what precautions and immunizations are necessary for travel in Africa: //

Malaria areas are: Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, northern Namibia, northern Botswana and the low-lying eastern part of South Africa, north of Richards Bay (especially in summer between October and April).

Yellow Fever

Some Southern African countries require proof of vaccination against Yellow Fever (International Yellow Fever Certificate). The requirements differ depending on your destination, which country you have travelled from and which countries were previously visited.

You will also need an updated International Yellow Fever Certificate and Vaccination Booklet especially if travelling from South America and countries visited with Yellow Fever. If residing in Brazil please contact ANVISA for more information.



Passengers traveling from the following countries or visiting these countries in conjunction with other Southern African countries will need proof of yellow fever vaccination (International Yellow Fever Certificate):

Angola, Argentina, Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Colombia, Congo, Ivory Coast, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecuador, Equatorial Guinea, Ethiopia, Guyana, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana , Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Guyana, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, Sudan, Suriname, Togo, Trinidad and Tobago , Uganda, United republic of Tanzania, Venezuela, Zambia.

Note that the yellow fever vaccination must be administered no later than 10 days before departure. It is imperative that you clarify the requirements for your particular journey before travel. Please consult the relevant embassy of your intended destination.

Due to frequently changing requirements, Travel For Life can only give advice, and will not be held responsible for costs incurred if entry requirements and vaccination requirements are not met.

Airline restrictions
Luggage guide

The luggage weight limit on national flights within South Africa is 20 – 23kgs (44 – 50lbs). For flights on smaller aircraft into safari lodges, you must use soft-sided luggage (no wheels or rigid frames) and bags cannot be overly large or bulky. The allowance for scheduled charter flights is 15 kg (33lbs). The maximum dimensions of the soft bags that can be accommodated are as follows: 25cm (10 inches) wide x 30cm (12 inches) high and 62cm (24 inches) long.

SAA cannot accept any check-in items weighing more than 32kg. Any items exceeding this limit will either have to be repacked into separate bags or checked in at the SAA Cargo counter and flown at cargo rates.

Baggage Allowance for Domestic Flights:

Business Class is 1 piece at 32kg

Economy Class is 1 piece at 23kg

Carry-on/hand luggage allowances are unaffected by this policy change. Passengers are allowed to take 1 bag on board the aircraft, weighing no more than 8kg. In addition, passengers may take 1 laptop bag not weighing more than 8kg. Excess baggage, i.e. additional items, or where the baggage exceeds the weight and or size allowance, will be charged at a flat rate per piece of luggage at ZAR250 per extra bag. If you have 1 bag of 32kg you will be charged ZAR250 for the excess 10kg to board the domestic flight.

If you need to cancel or make changes to a confirmed booking, cancellation/amendment charges may be payable to the supplier. The amount of such charges will depend on the individual supplier’s cancellation policy and these charges usually are dependent on the period of notice given. The cancellation policy of each establishment, tour operator or other service provider is provided to the customer with the initial quote.

Nothing on this website constitutes an offer on the part of Travel For Life (Pty) Ltd, or on the part of the suppliers. The matters detailed constitute an invitation to you to make an offer on the stated terms to purchase arrangements featured. Our suppliers have the right to accept or decline any such offer.
