The quaint seaside village of Hermanus is located on the Southern coast of the Western Cape. It is the best land-based whale watching destination in the world, and is considered South Africa’s Whale Watching Mecca. It is only 120 kilometers from Cape Town, making it a convenient and easy to reach destination. Southern Right whales visit Walker Bay from June to December to calve, and can be viewed from a boat, kayak, helicopter, plane, micro light or from the shore.

Hermanus has the world’s only Whale Crier, a local man who alerts you to the whereabouts of the whales by blowing his kelp horn. This bohemian town serves up excellent cuisine and fantastic markets. There are many eateries lining the streets, including ocean side pubs, award winning restaurants, local fish markets and relaxed cafés, not to mention world-class hotels.

The Hawston Sea Festival usually happens during the first week of December each year.  It attracts hundreds of visitors who enjoy the delicious sea foods such as fresh crayfish, perlemoen (abalone), paella and snoek dishes.

March to May brings about the mildest weather, making it a comfortable time to stay in the village. This is also the beginning of winter specials and Easter markets. June to the beginning of August is the start of whale season, and the best time of year to do Shark Cage diving in Gansbaai. This is the time when winter specials are in full swing, and when the markets and shops are full of interesting and beautiful winter attire.
