Grootbos – The Best Getaway in the Cape
We recently spent two amazing nights at the wonderful Grootbos Nature Reserve. Grootbos is a small and exclusive eco-reserve situated between Hermanus and Gansbaai overlooking the beautiful Walker Bay.
We stayed at the stunning Forest Lodge, which is located in an old Milkwood Forest. The suites at Forest Lodge are amazing, with a large bedroom and bathroom as well as a lounge area with a wooden fireplace. A large veranda provides beautiful views of the ocean.
The main lodge building is also stunning, with a large open lounge area leading on to the restaurant. The views from the lodge are breathtaking. The pool area looks inviting and relaxing, although we did not use it due to chilly winter weather. It looks like the perfect place to relax in summer; talk about a pool with a view!
For Alexandra and myself, this was the perfect getaway as it is only about 2 hours from where we live in Stellenbosch. It is also worth mentioning that the coastal drive to Grootbos is absolutely stunning.
When we arrived at Grootbos the weather was rather terrible but this did not matter at all to us. We had a great lunch followed by catching up on our favourite TV series in our luxury suite, something that does not happen often as we have a busy little 4 year old at home.
Dinner was an incredible 5 course menu with lots of great local ingredients and also some wonderful wine from the Walker Bay area.
The following morning we started the day with a guided walk through the Fynbos reserve. A great way to work up a bit of an appetite before enjoying a lovely breakfast.
Dinner was once again an amazing experience. Grootbos truly offers a five star dining experience, the restaurant measures up to any of the best restaurants in Cape Town and the Cape Winelands. The food, service and wines are all truly top class.
After breakfast on our final day we went around to Garden Lodge and to the Grootbos Villa to have a look at the other accommodation alternatives at Grootbos.
Garden Lodge is a wonderful alternative for families. The rooms are beautiful, luxurious and spacious. There are so many activities for children staying here that parents will have no problems keeping the little ones entertained. There is even a wonderful playroom in the main lodge, here kids will find a pool table, foosball table, movie area and amazing fairy tale play area.
We also visited the spectacular private Villa at Grootbos. This is an amazing house with 6 spacious en-suite bedrooms, huge entertainment areas and an amazing pool area. The house even has a cinema in the basement! The Villa at Grootbos comes with a 24 hour butler and a private chef and it offers complete privacy in a truly luxurious environment. This is an amazing alternative for larger families or groups of friends travelling together.
